The production of wood
The wood of the chestnut has the qualities essential for many different purposes: it is flexible, resistant to rot, capable of being split…
It is most often exploited by coppicing (where the wood is cut every 7 or 8 years). It yields numerous products: stakes, fencing, “clisses” (thin strips of wood which are used in the manufacture of woven articles such as chairs or baskets), the “feuillard” (a thin coppiced chestnut pole, split in two along the grain, which can be bent around barrels or used to make lobster pots). Nowadays, designers and cabinetmakers use it to make contemporary indoor or outdoor furniture and gardeners use it widely to create stylish decoration.
